Sips & Strategies - Truth Coffee
In this second issue of Tremento’s Hospitality Marketing School, I want to introduce you to Truth Coffee in Cape Town, South Africa. It's one of the most unforgettable coffee shops I've ever visited. Why? Read on!
As said, Truth still tops my list of remarkable coffee spots. The secret lies in their decor, their commitment to style, and the way they own the steampunk theme. They deliver on it in every single detail.
As you step into their Victorian warehouse, you’ll be welcomed by steam machinery, elaborate decor, and perfectly themed outfits (they worked with Haldane Martin). The staff, whether baristas or waiters, are in Victorian-inspired attire. It includes high hats, goggles, suits, and leather aprons. You’ll rarely see better-dressed coffee shop staff (see for yourself here). Oh, and their menu? Printed like a newspaper —which feels right on point.
Many coffee shops flirt with a steampunk logo, but inside, you’ll find minimalist or industrial decor. Not here. Truth Coffee lives and breathes it.
The whole experience makes an impression not just because of the great coffee but because of the concept and design. This is marketing through storytelling at its best.
Truth doesn't post much on social media. And… they don’t have to. Their decor inspires visitors to share photos and tag them → free marketing! Truth’s customer posts make the coffee shop’s brand visible online without requiring a heavy social media presence from their team.
For a deeper look into what makes Truth Coffee unique, check out this series of videos by TrueTale Productions, “Through the Lens of Truth.” The creative visionary behind Truth, David Donde, didn't stop there. He opened three more unique venues: Art of Duplicity, Rapt Indulgence, and Flour Market.
To this day, I recommend Truth Coffee to friends going to Cape Town. It's the first place I'll go when I return. Thanks to their incredible storytelling and design, they’re still top of mind. And yes, I’d pay anything for a coffee there—it’s all about the experience.

Key Takeaways from Truth
• Go All In on Your Theme: A strong, consistent theme creates a memorable experience that guests won’t forget. Truth Coffee’s steampunk design touches every detail of their brand, from the decor to the menu and even the staff’s attire.
• Leverage User-Generated Content: By building an Instagram-worthy interior, Truth Coffee doesn’t need to post constantly—they let customers share the story for them. This strategy keeps their brand active online without extra effort.
• Become Top of Mind with Storytelling: Truth Coffee doesn’t just serve coffee; they serve an experience that customers talk about long after their visit. That’s the value of strong storytelling and brand identity.
Three Things You Can Do Right Now to Create a Truth-Like Experience:
1. Choose a Theme and Commit: Pick a unique theme or concept that resonates with your brand, and apply it consistently across decor, menu design, and even staff attire. This creates a cohesive experience that guests will remember.
2. Encourage Photo Moments: Design spaces or presentation details that guests will want to photograph. A unique menu, quirky decor, or signature dish plating can create instant shareability on social media.
3. Use Reposts to Keep Content Flowing: Regularly repost content from guests who tag your business on social media. This gives you a steady stream of posts without needing to create it all in-house, saving time and boosting your visibility.
Truth Coffee is a prime example of how a strong theme and memorable experience can turn a coffee shop into a destination. Let their commitment to style and storytelling inspire you to create a space that guests can’t wait to share!
